The Resort – Velka Raca
Oscadnica is the longest village in Slovakia. It is located in the Northern corner of Slovakia near to the Polish border. The village itself is in what is called a “Frost Valley” this means that the village has much lower temperatures than many of the surrounding areas even though the mountains are relatively low in altitude. The ski season starts from mid-December and ends in mid to late April. It is rare for the village or slopes to be without snow during these periods.
Due to significant investment in the ski resort over the last five years the slopes in Oscadnica offer some of the most up to date facilities in Slovakia. The resort has state of the art equipment including snow making machines, modern chair lifts/Gondola and chip and pin ski passes. All of which you would expect to find in major european resorts. Ski buses run throughout the village to the various slopes every 10 minutes. One of the slopes is open every evening for night time skiing.
Oscadnica is just 32km from Zilina, one of Slovakia’s largest cities. Zilina boasts a wealth of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and cafes. A typical meal out with 2 courses and drinks for 4 people would cost approximately £12 - £16.
There is a separate snowboard slope and there are English speaking instructors. One hour’s individual tuition with an English speaking instructor costs £10 for one person or £24 for family of 5! Whilst there are some some black runs, it is a medium sized resort, ideally suited for families and intermediate skiers.
Comments about Velka Raca:
By Slovakian standards this is an extensive, pretty, intermediate area with respectable a vertical drop. It is east of Cadca, on the Polish border. There's 10km of tree-lined slopes, served by 8 relatively queue-free lifts and accessed by 3 distinct ski centres: Laliky (630m), Dedovka (650m) and Marguska . Extensive snowmaking exists. Night skiing is available plus cross-country trails, including the long incline up to the Velka Raca summit (1236m). (Snowforecast.com)
I agree with the previous reviewer, this is a great little resort. It's good for families and a cheap place to learn or improve. The ski buses to the runs are frequent and the chairlift queues moderate. (Anonymous quote from Onthesnow.com)
